Norwalk at a glance

Norwalk is a city of 12,799 people (2020), mostly in Warren County, just south of Des Moines International Airport.

What that means for your foundation

Norwalk has grown fast, with many newer subdivisions on poured basements alongside older homes near the original town. Newer backfill settles in the first years and can tip soil toward the walls; see sump pumps and drainage. Builders here often used poured walls with window wells along the back, and wells without covers collect rain and leaves.

Near the North River

Lower ground toward the North River stays wetter after storms, and sump pumps there run often. Patios and decks added after construction sometimes slope back toward the house and need regrading.

From Pyra to Norwalk

Settlers arrived around 1846, among them Samuel Crow near the North River, and the little town was first known as Pyra. George W. Swan laid out the town and renamed it after Norwalk, Connecticut, where he was born. A narrow-gauge railroad arrived in 1882 but was abandoned in 1947 after a flood badly damaged its North River bridge. Norwalk incorporated in 1900 with Adam Stiffler as first mayor. Homes near the river benefit from a good look at drainage; see basement waterproofing. Buyers looking at homes on the newer streets often ask whether hairline cracks in a poured wall are a concern; most are not, but a dated photo makes it easy to tell if one is growing.
