Basements and deep frost
Most Des Moines homes sit over a full basement, and winters regularly bring nights below zero. Frozen, saturated soil pushes on basement walls from outside, which is why bowed block walls and horizontal cracks are such common calls here; see bowing wall repair.
Storm season water
Des Moines gets about 36 inches of precipitation a year, most of it in the warm months and often in heavy afternoon thunderstorms. Sump pits that fill fast and seepage where the floor meets the wall are the usual result; see sump pumps and drainage.

Common questions
Is a cracked basement wall always serious?
No. Thin vertical shrinkage cracks are common in poured walls. Horizontal cracks, bowing or cracks that keep widening deserve a professional look.
Can a bowed wall be pushed back straight?
Sometimes partly, over time, with anchors that are tightened gradually. The main goal is stopping further movement.
Will a waterproofing paint fix my leak?
Coatings can help a damp wall but rarely stop water that's under pressure.
Can I seal a crack myself?
Hairline, dry cracks can be patched. Leaking or structural cracks need the cause addressed first.
How long do sump pumps last?
Many last several years, but it varies with how often they run. Test yours each spring.
